Solid Waste Education

The South Carolina Solid Waste Act of 1991 established reduction and recycling goals. The Act stressed that the counties promote the reduction, reuse, and recycling of solid waste before land filling or incineration at permitted facilities. This made it incumbent upon the counties to educate the public in the benefits of the Three R's -- Reduction, Reuse, and Recycle.

The day will come again, as it did during the 1990's with the closing in sight of Aiken County's Langley MSW landfill, to begin selecting another site for a new landfill location. Each pound of waste placed in the Three Rivers Regional MSW Landfill shortens its life expectancy. To increase its life means each of us doing our part in putting into practice the Three R's.
